Digital Names Are On The Rise

The internet has changed everything, including how we name things. But the names we’re using now are antiquated and insecure, and they don’t work for everyone. Technology could provide us with a solution, but it hasn’t yet because some people benefit from keeping our names in an outdated state.

What if there were a way to make sure that when someone says “James Smith,” they are talking about the same person? What if there was one definitive James Smith?

While yes, the technology is still being expanded upon, we’ve already seen plenty of ways people are utilizing names in Web 3.0. One that stands out among the crowd is Ethereum Name Service (ENS).

With the introduction of blockchain technology, a whole new way of using names, specifically usernames, opened. This is where ENS comes in. Built specifically for the Ethereum network, ENS allows people to own their username, which in ENS’s case, is usually followed by “.eth.” From there, the user can begin to build out their profile data and use it across various Ethereum services/applications.

Another service that is offering the everyday user to stake claim within Web 3.0 is Unstoppable Domains. While ENS was primarily for personal use, specifically with wallets, Unstoppable Domains are a little different. Unstoppable Domains allow both users and businesses to build decentralized websites.

These new solutions are entirely 100% owned and controlled by the user. You decide how your name is used in the digital space and how your data is managed.

This is only the beginning, though. Unlike names of the past, these new solutions offer far more application than we’ve previously seen. Digital World is here to stay, building upon the current technology to offer everyone a fresh start in Web 3.0.
